MED-ENEC is a regional project funded by the European Union to increase the use of Energy Efficiency measures and Renewable Energy systems in southern and eastern Mediterranean countries. Apart from policy advice and business development, special emphasis is placed on the support of large building programs to enable them to act as multipliers of climate friendly technologies and measures.

During the first phase (2006 – 2009), the MED-ENEC project supported 10 low-energy-buildings as pilot projects in all partner countries from which six received the prestigeous “National Energy Globe Award”. In addition, two International Symposia, fifteen Regional Workshops, twenty seven National Consultations, five Investors Meetings and three Energy Days realised on fairs served for awareness raising, exchange of good practices and networking. The second phase of the MED-ENEC project started its activities in January 2010 and is planned for a period of four years. It is also funded by the European Union and implemented by a consortium led by the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ). The project covers the 9 southern Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Syria and Tunisia. The project office is based is in Cairo/Egypt.

With the frequent increases and high instability of prices for primary energy resources, energy efficiency becomes a key for economic and environmental development of a country, a community or a company. It is a critical issue in a global market where productivity and competitiveness are the major performance indicators. Increasing energy efficiency and reducing climate impacts are crucial challenges to be met in coming years. The building sector has a very high potential to contribute to energy savings without causing any effect on indoor climate comfort, the service quality in residential and commercial buildings, and in production quality of industrial establishments.
